Wimborne Minster and Kingston Lacy

I seem to be away again. Not sure how that happened!

Looking for somewhere to have breakfast I settled on Wimborne Minster.

Wimborne is a small market town (15000?) in Dorset. It has the feel of a small cathedral city which is highlighted by its fine Minster Church of St Cuthburga and King Ethelred I (Alfred the Great's brother)  was buried there. The church was remodelled and rebuilt by the Normans between 1120-1180. It contains the tomb of John Beaufort and Margaret Beaufort, their daughter is relatively famous and was the mother of Henry VII.

Dates to the late 14th century

Then on to Kingston Lacy

The obelisk is 2150 years old and is the Philae Obelisk which played a role in the decipherment of hieroglyphics.

Sir John Bankes (Lord Chieft Justice and Attorney General to Charles 1).

Charles I

This is Mary Bankes a remarkable woman. The family were royalists and Mary defended Corfe Castle (which the family owned) for a 3 year siege.

If you look closely this painting is incomplete.

A nice day.
