My first visit to Compton Verney

What to do today? With Baddesley Clinton and Packwood suffering from the flooding I thought I'd give them a miss. I considered Dyrham Park or Witley Court but both are a fair trek and EVENTUALLY I decided that after 26 years of visiting this part of the country I ought to visit Compton Verney.

Now the problem is that visiting historic properties is pricey and as I am a member of the National Trust, English Heritage and the Historic Houses Association I like getting my monies worth!

The current house was built in 1714 by Richard Verney and was later remodelled by Robert Adam and it is set in a Lancelot Capability Brown parkland.

In 1993 it was bought by the Peter Moores Foundation in a run down condition and turned into an art gallery. Today it houses collections focussing on  Neapolitan, North European Medieval, British Portraits, Chinese Bronzes and British Folk art. There are also one off exhibitions.

Now not all of the things displayed are to my taste BUT it was certainly worth the visit.

There was a medieval church which Brown demolished to "improve the view". He built this chapel to replace it hence some of the other memorials....

So in we go...

When I came out the sun was out so I had a wander around the park.

It was a very nice day
