The West Coast

If there is one part of Guernsey that I find special it is the west coast. It isn't built up, you can pootle along looking at wildlife and the history. Oh and it is a comfortable walk :)

I started off at Rocquaine Bay

All I could hear was the sea and the birds BLISS

Fort Pezeries, there has been a fortification here since 1680 what you see is 18th century.

On to La Table des Pions. it was probably constructed in the late 18th or early 19th century, It is linked to the Chevauchee which dates back to 1530 and is a ceremony to check the conditions of the roads, although the customer may have religious overtones.

Le Trepied is a megelithic burial chamber.

Next to it is Mont Chinchon Battery. RIGHT next to it!

Grand Rocque Battery

Rousse Tower No 11. A string of these were built during the American War of Independence when the French backed the Americans.

Fort Saumarez. A German observation tower built on top of a martello tower dating to 1805.

I managed to arrive when the tide was out and I could walk to Lihou Island now a RAMSAR site which had the ruins of a priory on it. It was used as target practice during WWII by the Germans. Today it is a haven of tranquility.

The L'Eree Battery

Fort Hommet a martello tower adapted by the Germans

it is fairly people light especially along the coast. I think this is the best time to visit the islands.

Definitely avoid the holidays. I once was here at the end of the school holidays amazing how the parking changed when the kids were back at school LOL
