Godolphin

I went to Godolphin today.

Godolphin is slightly unusual for an NT house. The house is a real mish mash of Tudor and Stuart. There were plans to built an Italianate house but these were shelved during the Civil War and only the front survives. The house was inherited by a daughter of the family and thus from the 18th century was used by tenant farmers who were allowed to demolish the old great hall. Today the house is only open the first Saturday to Thursday of the month the rest of the time it is a holiday let.

I am told that the Trust bought the House for its gardens which date to the 15th century and are some of the earliest in Western Europe. They don't have that manicured NT look. I do wonder if the Trust will ever restore the medieval fish ponds.

The fish ponds

There was a Spotted Flycatcher in the garden.

I wandered off to Trerice (I went last Saturday). There was a bit of wildlife about.

Faded Painted Lady.

Red Admiral

Large Skipper?

Small Tortoiseshell

Scarlet Tiger Moth

There was a Hummingbird Hawk Moth which I never got a photo of. I did get a brief video LOL

That looks a big house for a holiday let or is it divided into apartments? Well done on the spotted fly etc :)
