Barrington Court and Forde Abbey

Barrington court is a tudor mansion that fell in to disrepair until it was restored in the 1920s.

The stable block was restored as a house abd the new garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll who never visited. Her planting plans were never fully realised.

The contents were sold and the house is empty although it was once used as a showroom for Stuart interiors.

The house is now closed for refurbishment of the roof but is has been a while.

Forde Abbey is a former cistercian Abbey that is now a family home. It is noted for its fine gardens.

Forde claims the highest powered fountain in the country. The one at Stanway is higher but that is gravity fed.

All in all a nice day in two lovely gardens and both surprisingly quiet.
