Hay On Wye, Westonbury Mill Water Garden and Shobdon Church

I went to Hay On Wye, the town of books,  this morning. I have an affection for the place as it was what got me into holidaying back in 1997.

I was disappointed last time so how about today? well the heat didn't help but it has changed. There are way less bookshops and those that were seemed less well stocked. Well Addymans was pretty good. Although it and Booths were selling new stuff as well.

So where to ?  Well Westonbury Mill Water Garden was on the way back to my pub. It is relatively small but also likely to be less crowded. It was created in 1997 by Richard Pim (who owned it when I last visited). He retired in 2020 and the property put up for sale. The current owners agreed to buy and keep the gardens open to the public. One of the owners was giving talks today. That's the sort of thing that endures me to a place. The £8 entrance fee tells you it is not vast but it is quirky and eccentric and eventually. I found a shady spot to read. The cafe is good value as well

This made from 5000 bottles. Rumours that his suppliers were my friends Jan and Tony are surely scurrilous.

Eventually the heat persuaded me that enough was enough but as Shobdon was on my way....

St John's Shobdon. Naturally I have been here before. It looks reasonably conventional until you step inside

what?

The medieval church was completely rebuilt for the 2nd Viscount Bateman between 1749 and 1752 in the Rococo style. I believe a younger me said it looks like a tarts boudoir! I will admit it has sort of grown on me! But I can summon the enthusiasm of a Jenkins or Pevener

The old font in the Herefordshire school.

The arches from the old church are an "eye catcher" a top a small hill which is easily walkable. Unless it is very hot like today ;)
