St Mary's Helmingham

St Mary's is a fairly typically looking East Anglian church. It is situated next to the adjacent hall (the gardens are well worth a visit).

From the outside you first notice that fine tower and then wonder why there is a dormitory window!

The church was built by the Tollemache family (who built the hall) at the turn of the 16th century. It is filled with monuments to the family and is a bit like a private chapel.

The bible texts are from the 19th century.

This is why there is a Dormer window :)

I didn't have a clue what the church was like before entering I was visiting the gardens and knew that my friends wouldn't be early ;) I am pleased I went in as its a fascinating building.
