Mr Davis says
I will argue in this by-election against the slow strangulation of fundamental British freedoms by this government.
Now I'm not sure what this will achieve. I'm sure Mr Davis will see a victory as an assertion that the British Public back him. Sadly for Mr Davis this won't be the case. Opinion polls show that the public actually agree with the 42 detention limit, but I think the Labour Party under Gordon Brown might struggle against Robert Mugabe at the moment so Mr Davis will win and frankly it will mean diddly squat.
But here is a curiosity a right wing politician is taking a strong stance on human rights that many on the left of the Labour party agree with. Oh and if I'm honest I think he's right too.
Still his gesture is, alas. an empty one.

Its not really principled at all. Its cos he has had a spat with Cameron over the repeal of the 42 days being a manifesto commitment which Cameron wont make it!
The liberals will not contest the seat and I hope Labour do not put up a candidate either.
Members of the shadow cabinet were briefing against Davis this morning.
Its a safe seat - its a publicity stunt for an increasingly egotistical MP!
well as I say I think its an empty gesture.
but I am becoming disillusioned by Labours control freak nature.
I think i'll be voting Lib Dem
