There are many things about our fellow humans that depress me. The world is going to the dogs (no pun intended) that's for sure.
Only two words spring to mind - Chav Scum. We need a culling plan for these people, or a sterilisation plan so they can't procreate even more of their kind.

I wonder where the expression pond life comes from; I have great endearment for frogs, toads, and all the other creatures and it seems unfair that they should be linked to a negative term
You already know my feelings on the matter. Personally, I'd like to do the same to whoever did this, along with anyone else who inflicts ill treatment on any defenceless animal (or person for that matter) Scum and vermin, the lot of them. Our planet would be a lot better off without them.
