I went to Saffron Screen to see a live screening of Dances at a Gathering and the Cellist from Covent Garden. I had my doubts when I booked this but hey....
First we had Dances at a Gathering by Jerome Robbins. No story, no sets just 10 dancers dancing to the solo piano music of Frederic Chopin. Now listening to solo Chopin for 65 minutes works for me and the dancing really enhanced the pieces. Marinela Nunez really has presence.
The second is a brand new ballet by Cathy Marston. It tells the story of Jacqueline du Pre. It starred Lauren Cuthbertson as du Pre, Marcelino Sambe as the Cello and Matthew Ball as Daniel Barenboim. The programme says Cellist, Instrument and Conductor not naming them
This really was mesmerising. Du Pre suffered from MS and Cuthbertson started as attractive and vibrant and seemed to fade before us! How she did it I don't know but it was a wonderful to watch. Sambe was excellent as the cello.
You can see a clip here
It was a wonderful evening
