Calke Abbey is near where I am staying so chose that to visit today.
The National Trust describe Calke as the unstately home. This is because it was allowed to full into disrepair before being passed to the National Trust in 1985.
There was originally a priory on the site. The current house dates to 1701-1704 and was apparently renamed Calke Abbey as it sounded posher!
Today the house is presented as found with the trust doing remedial work but no restoration. Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe (10th and last baronet) was devoted to his natural history collection, apparently when his eldest daughter inherited she sold some to pay death duties.
St Giles Church
These were the former private apartments.
A cracking ***** scone!
Into the house
876 St Wystan, Repton
The church is a Saxon foundation (that's pre 1066) and still has a Saxon crypt
C B Fry was an English sportsman, politician, diplomat, academic, teacher, writer, editor and publisher who is best remembered as cricketer. He is buried at Repton (yes the famous school is next door and he went there).
St Michael and St Mary, Melbourne
I have been before . The church dates to the beginning of the 12th century.
