First stop was Leicester Cathedral. In 1927 the parish church of St Martins was elevated to cathedral status. In 2015 the remains of Richard III were reburied here.
Last night I had an advert for an art trail of elephants in my facebook feed. There was an elephant outside of the cathedra
This glass was installed when Richard was buried (or close to when), It is based on parts of his life story.
The tomb. Very simple.
There were mini elephants in the church
So I wandered to my true reason for visiting and this was outside
905 St Mary de Castro
whilst waiting for it to open I found this nearby.
The church was built in 1107 and apparently Richard III worshipped here, Henry VI was knighted here and Geoffrey Chaucer married his second wife here. The church was once the chapel to the nearby castle.
I chose to move on (I'm not keen English cities/ large towns). I knew Althorp was open AND was part of my HHA membership so...
I grabbed a spot of lunch. Althorp was the family home of the late Princess Diana (she is buried on an island in the middle of a lake here). Her brother Earl Spencer thought it unwise that she be buried at the nearby church (and regrettably he is probably tight). Interestingly he was signing books today and he was having photos taken when I arrived.
Alas no photos inside but its his home. It is well worth going inside as it has a fabulous art collection.
The famous island
The building below is a temple of "Diana". There is always a volunteer/staff member there. Others like to have there photo taken whereas I was admiring the wildlife.
As you can see the weather was grey, cool and wet. It did mean though it was quiet!
