Lavenham

Hello it's grey? after our long hot summer with blue skies this is a bit of a shock! Anyhow I headed to Lavenham

Today Lavenham is an attractive rather prosperous and desirable place to leave (based on house prices), now between the wars Lavenham had a lot of buildings in disrepair, luckily today they are in a good state.

Lavenham has lots of fine old buildings the reason for this is that in 1524 it was the 14th richest town in England! All made from the wool trade. This didn't last long but still that's pretty impressive.

That wealth certainly shows in the fine wool church

The fabulous Guildhall

Rameses....... dead cats were thought to protect against witchcraft.

I assume this is for a kids trail!

Witches mark. Matthew Hopkins the witch-hunter visited Lavenham and "found" two witches.

The guildhall was used as a Brideswell (jail). The punishment were harsh.

One of the room has a changing exhibition. At the moment it is about the Taylor family... Isaac Taylor  the engraver and his daughter Jane (who wrote the poem The Star which became Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)

I always enjoy seeing your lovely photos of Lavenham. Interesting to see the witch mark too.
