This is late news but......
Every five years the National Trust does a survey on Puffin numbers in the Farne Islands.
In 2003 the number of Puffins recorded was 55,674 of nesting pairs, the 2008 survey saw a crash with the number of nesting pairs being 36,835. That's a pretty dramatic decline.
So it was good to read that the 2013 saw a slight increase of 8% to 39,962. Ok a long way to go but still at least it is in the right direction!
Given some extreme weathers over the past few years the rangers were greatly relieved. It was also reported that the Isle of May colony 100km North of the Farnes had avoided further decline.
