Chickney and Thaxted

During Covid, when I was avoiding people, I discovered a post office in the country that had a nice cafe attached. As I had to go to a post office today I decided to visit some places I hadn't been to for a while and end at the cafe for lunch.

St Mary's, Chickney is a redundant church now in the care of the Churches Conservation Church. It isn't a grand church but it is one that I always find charming. It is for lovers of simplicity and a reminder of how  valuable the CCT  is. It is also so much easier to find 25 years ago there was not a single clue to where Chickney was!! Now it is sign posted!

The church was built "about" 1000 AD with some later extensions. Its furnishing are simple.

Just down the road is the town (just what is the difference between a small town and a large village?) of Thaxted.

As I have commented before when I see the church spire as I approach I am a little kid again on a Sunday afternoon drive.

Bizarrely there is a not a single cafe or tea room in Thaxted. Luckily the vintage homeware shop has a coffee machine and does excellent take aways (they sell coffee)  so I bought one! I didn't comment that it was odd there wasn't a tea room and they agreed it was daft.

The church of St John the baptist is late medieval perpendicular architecture and a "slight" contrast to Chickney.

I drove to Great Bardfield posted my parcel and went next door and ordered a coffee and a sausage sandwich (great sausages btw) and sat outside in the sun!
