Barking Church

I had a wander lunchtime (Very unusual event!) and went for a wander St Margaret's Church Barking.

I first visited the church in 2002 I THINK. It is in the book

I have to say it is nice that the church is open and for anyone wanting to visit 11-2 Tuesday-Thursday the cafe is open but the church may be open other times.

There was an abbey on the site since the 7th century, although the ruins remaining  (not substantial with the exception of the curfew tower) date from later.

James Cook was married here in 1672.

There were Ring-Necked Parakeets in the trees.

A beautiful and interesting church Pete. I just adore the font cover with all those birds. Do you know how old it is please?

Hi RR

I think it was designed by Jessie Jack the daughter of Arts & Crafts designer and architect George Jack. Shortly before his death (1931) George was involved in the interior refurbishment of the interior of Barking Church.

Jessie was a twin and born in 1894. I believe the refurbishment took place 1929-1936 so that date seems likely.

regards

Pete

Thanks so much Pete - in a way it looks older. But so interesting to read of the Arts and Craft connection :) It is a thing of beauty.
