We chose Bologna because it was a transport hub and a good base for visiting other smaller cities in the region. We ignored Trentitalia's suggested route as if the train was late we'd miss our connection and instead went to Florence and from there to Bologna. As we approached Santa Maria Novella I saw Florence's Duomo and I wanted to stay!!
My previous day trip to Bologna last year had been on a dull grey day.... it looked so different in the sun!
