Recent Concerts

I've been to a few concerts recently

I went to the excellent Saffron Hall at the end of April to see the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra under conductor Jiří Bělohlávek.

The programme was

Smetana - Overture to The Bartered Bride
Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto Interval
Vaughan Williams - The Lark Ascending
Dvořák - Symphony No.7

The violinist Chloe Hanslip played the Mendelssohn and the Vaughan Williams.

The Czech Phil are one of the great orchestra's of the world and it was wonderful to see them in the intimacy of Saffron Hall. It was also good to listen to the excellent Chloe Hanslip.

The weekend before last I went to the Royal Opera House to see La Fille Mal Gardee. This is a ballet with choreography by Frederick Ashton, It was enjoyable but I found it a little lightweight I couldn't really say why..... and the music was pleasant but hardly challenging.....

On Sunday I went to the Wigmore Hall to see the Schumann Quartet. The programme was

Verdi - String Quartet in E Minor
Beethoven - String Quartet in C Op 59 No 3 'Razumovsky'

The encore was the 2nd movement (Andante) of Mozart's Quartet in D Major K575

I know the last bit because the quartet engaged with the audience which I really like to see. It was a really engaging performance and an enjoyable concert.

I agree with your comment re the Ballet.. seemed a bit lightweight - prefer one with more content.

But Saffron Hall and Wigmore were excellent...
