Little Chapel, Folk and Costume Museum, Fort Hommett and coast

It has been incredibly windy and it was again this morning so instead of heading to a boat to the islands we headed in land to the Little Chapel.

It was built by Brother Déodat who started work in March 1914. His plan was to create a miniature version of the famous grotto and basilica at Lourdes in France. Guardianship of the Little Chapel now rests with Blanchelande Girls College which is run by a Charitable Trust. The Little Chapel is beautifully decorated with seashells, pebbles and colourful pieces of broken china and the College has an ongoing programme of repairs and improvements.

Came out and found these.....

So we headed off to Saumarez Park which is home to the National Trust for Guernsey's Folk and Costume Museum. This is a really interesting looking at Guernsey life. Part of the exhibit is about the rise and fall of the Guernsey Tomato industry (there are lots of obviously disused greenhouses about).

Anyone know which blue this is??

Speckled Wood

We headed to the coast where it was a little windy..... and headed for lunch at Cobo Bay. I had a Guernsey Bean Jar it is a mix of Haricot Beans and Pork it was tasty. We then explored the coast.

This is a mix of Cobo Bay and Vazonv Bay. The Fort is Fort Hommet which is a Napoleonic Fort that was reused by the German's when they invaded,

There is a gun battery there that has been restored and luckily is open Tuesday afternoons..

A shower.

The conditions were cramped!!

Tomorrow promises to be much less windy so it'll be into St Peter Port to pick up a boat to Herm.

It does look a rather lovely island Pete and rather quiet?

I think the butterfly is a Holly Blue but you are so close to France Guernsey may well get continental species which I don't know about.

I adore the shell Chapel - so pretty. We went to a shell house and garden on Jersey but that chapel is something else :)

Enjoyed yesterday's post too - the orchid reserve look rather special. Am thinking I may have to add Guernsey to my list of places to visit! And presumably no passport required :) At least these days we aren't tied to school holidays :)

Yes, the orchids were gorgeous.

Problem is I don't have a photo id as my driving licence is ancient and the old paper one. The only photo id I have is an out of date Open University students' association card and somehow I don't think they'd accept that! Not sure why you need photo id when its not abroad but I think you need it even to fly Birmingham to Manchester!!

Key is to go outside school hols I think! The food does sound rather wonderful :)

Hope you got to Herm - look forward to your post and enjoy the rest of your holiday :)
