Venice Day 1 - Grey, Cloudy, Murky? I didn't sign up for this!

As we touched down at Marco Polo airport Venice the pilot apologised as the fog hadn't lifted..... given I had left in blue skies I was not impressed.

We found our luggage and went to pick the boat up. A boat ride to Venice how atmospheric in fog ? Not really! Although the first view of the Rialto bridge was nice, somehow though I'd have preferred a nice blue sky!

We found the hotel, it was easier once you realise that what looks like an alley is actually a street..... luggage was dumped and a camera extracted and off ....

The view from the hotel

we grabbed a bowl of pasta on the square and watched the world go round and drunk a glass of prosecco.....

activity on the square

ooh pigeons

delivery Venetian style! No cars here folks!

The first gondola!

The streets are narrow!

And a first view of St Mark's square.....

One of St Mark's domes.....

Doges Palace

The bridge of Sighs - I went through it later on the trip.

Just for Corinna :)

And there are fish in the canals.

The hotel at night!

I ended the day with a nice meal at a local tratoria. Probably the best Pinot Grigio I've tasted (not a big fan of PG! but this had some body).

But I ended it wanting some decent light!!

All that fog was a bit of a bummer... well done the pilot for a smooth landing in it...
