Essex Churches

It was a lovely morning but by lunchtime it was dull and grey and wet.

So we out to take pictures of local churches.

St Mary the Virgin Tilty. The church is small and was once the chapel at the gate to Tilty Abbey, the odd feature tells you it was part of something much bigger....

quite grand for a small church.......

This window for instance is way too grand!

All that is left of the abbey....

St Mary's Thaxted is a grand church. And I have mentioned many times its spire was a highlight of many family Sunday drive. It is currently without a priest, rather sad.

It is odd that Tilty was decorated for Christmas and Thaxted wasn't....

We went in to Poppy's tea room for a cuppa and some lovely cake.

Christmas Cake with tipsy cream

and Victoria Sponge

Alas Poppy's is closing on Friday :( hopefully they'll move somewhere in the new year....
