Longleat......

We stopped in Warminster first. Given the number of empty shops it has seen better days and then onto Longleat (I did this with trepidation I've been before but Dad hasn't).

We avoided the Safari Park: "they wouldn't let me out" - Dad, and went to the house.

Now let me say the house is magnificent it truly is BUT.....

the place is set up to make money. How many places to eat?? Ye gods every available space it seemed like. Now the UFO experience or Jungle Kingdom may be many peoples idea of fun but not mine. Surely in all that parkland they could move it away from the house? Anywhere that looked vaguely quiet had signs saying don't walk on the grass.

Let me stress it's not the Safari Park I object to which is well out of view, it's the massive commercialisation around the house that seems to me to have robbed the house of it's soul.

Know what you mean... sad isn't it that a beautiful place has to be degraded so much....

like the horse-riders in the water though..

Shame about the over-commercialisation - you did well to keep it out of the pics which are lovely, as always.

What a magnificent house. Too bad about the commercialization. Love the statue in the water.

A real pity about the aspect of making money out of every square feet. (of which there must be a lot!)

I remember that in the seventies this commercialisation had already started in places like Salisbury cathedral, so it must be a lot worse now in any other place, be it a church or house, which is such a shame.
Most historic buildings are not accessible to me any more, so I wouldn't really see how it is now in comparison.

Sounds like you had a great day though.

I'm sure you'll come up with some good ideas for that last break.

thanks all.

Yoke the commercialization at Salisbury I don't mind it's not too "in your face" and they have to raise money. This was maddening!!
