Seve

The word genius or great is over used in the modern world especially sport.

But Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros was just that a genius.

When I was a lad every year a bunch of American's would come over and win the open. The top European might make the cut - a slight exaggeration but you get my drift.

And then this charismatic young Spaniard came along he not only gave the Americans a bloody nose he did it with style. He went for the flag, he took risks. There was passion.

When Seve played Golf it was not a good walk spoiled.

Seve was not just a Spaniard he was the heart of the European Renaissance in the Ryder Cup. The UK maybe Euro-sceptic on politics but when Seve teed up for Europe everyone was behind him. He didn't abandon the European tour in favour of the lure of the greenback and that too endeared us to Seve.

Seve may not have won as many Majors as Woods and Nicklaus but then they didn't have Seve's style.

As I say the word genius is oft over used but Seve was just simply a genius.
