Thursday - the end of England and a garden

It was hot today!

We went to Battle first. Battle is the site of possibly the single most important event in English History. It is commim these days to assume that only recent events matter so perhaps many would say World War II or the funeral of Princess Diana but for me the victory of William of Burgundy over Harald II the last Saxon King would be my choice (the victory of Henry VII or the dissolution of the monastries are contenders).

Battle is where Senlac Hill is and Senlac Hill is the actual the site of the Battle of Hastings. Yes we are in 1066 country. William built an abbey on the hill where Harald fell. The abbey was dissolved in the 16th century and today there are ruins and a public school.

The stone marks the spot where Harald fell.

Harald was atop the hill William at the bottom.

Off then to Great Dixter the garden of the late Christopher Lloyd. A totally different style to the National Trust.

Greenfinch.

Spotted Flycatcher.

The garden of Christopher Lloyd is wonderful. Lovely fly catcher as well.

Battle looks like it's worth a visit - not somewhere I've been.

Great Dixter looks wonderful; I always like the more relaxed lool of Christopher Lloyd's garde designs.

(And we won't mention Spot Flys!!)
