The Uist Wader Project - An update

Some of you will beaware of the Uist Wader Project. This project is to protect wading birds on Uist, the hedgehog was introduced some years ago to the islands and it was blamed for eating the eggs of waders. The hogs were being systematically culled until a campaign to save them. Since then hogs have been captured and released on the mainland.

North Uist was thought to be free of hedgehogs but then one was spotted by a crofter n Bayhead. Trappers have caught three hedgehogs, these have now been removed and released on mainland Scotland.

In the latest phase of trapping, on the Isle of Benbecula, 109 hedgehogs have been captured.
