Sunday Morning over the Forest

I got up reasonably early and went to the forest. Was it meant to be so cold overnight?

Still good numbers of Bullfinches about. They are stunning birds when the sun catches the bright red chest of a male with the black head and slate grey back. Lots of Great Spots about one went haring after a Sparrowhawk. A coal tit and Siskins were a nice addition to the small year list.

The lake had 20 or so Pochard joining the normal Tufties, Teal, Gadwall and Mallards. It summer the lake has Mallards and Tufties in winter stuff drops in. Two Great Crested Grebes there. The lake has a breeding pair. Its one of the joys of summer to see them with there stripey headed babies.

The real star today was a Kingfisher flashing over the lake as I walked around suddenly TWO flashes of blue!

I finished off with a fox!

Sounds like you had a good morning. I find it amazing, all the different birds you get to see.

Didn't you do well? I haven't seen a bulfinch in ages.

We went for a drive in the Bedfordshire countryside today, we saw lots of Kestrels and a really odd thing - 9 swans sitting in a field of (probably) winter wheat. I wonder what they thought they were doing?

oc - if you have a lake near you then you'll find a lot of bird

TF - if you go near Welney you'll see 100's of Swans feeding on farm land!

Toffee apple
the swans spend most of their winter days feeding on the land!
In Kent today we saw lots of Mute Swans doing just that and a field with Mutes and Tundra Bean Geese and Bewick Swans all stuffing themselves!

Hey Pete still awaiting my first Bullfinch and Siskin oh and Kingfisher!
Read my blog to see the list is growing despite these missing birds and the dips we had today! I love the begining of a New Year List!

Thanks for the info, Pete and Corinna. It's heartwarming to know that I can still learn about things, even at this age, especially from bloggers, long may you reign!
