I've just heard that Jack Williamson died aged 98. He published his first SF story in 1928 and published his last novel in 2005!! He predated the "Golden Age" and was one of the few established authors who thrived after John W Campbell became editor of Astounding.
Famous works include The Humanoids, Darker Than You Think, Seetee Ship and The Legion of Space series (that introduced a young Pete to SF)
